Spring
General Seasons Tips
This is the time to get things ready for a healthy and glorious
growing period. Begin by examining things closely. Remove dead
leaves from perennials and start feeding bulbs with liquid fertilizer
as soon they emerge up from the soil. As they develop, apply deer
and rabbit deer repellent on tulips periodically.
Till soil deeply, add slow release garden fertilizer.
Evergreens that grow continually until frost can be pruned any
time from now until late August. Summer flowering shrubs should
be pruned very soon, before new growth, as they usually bloom
from new wood.
April
- Remove winter mulch from roses, spring bulbs and perennials if is still freezing do it in layers.
- Divide and transplant overgrown perennial spring moisture will help them root quickly.
- Till flower beds and add organic material { cow manure, composted leaves…}
- Remove rose cones.
- Plant frost tolerant pansies, violas for early spring color.
- Plant trees and shrubs as soon ground is dry enough for digging, late frost wont do any harm to newly planted trees.
- Apply fresh mulch and around shrub and trees for weed control and conserving moisture in soil.
- Remove tree wrap when snow melts.
- Prune hedges summer -flowering shrubs and check for damaged wood.
- For trees and shrubs and apply slow release fertilizer.
- Fertilize spring bulbs when foliage emerges.
- Apply crabgrass preventer to lawns.
Summer
General Seasons Tips
- Deadheading { removing faded flowers and seed heads } directing the plants energy to more flowering rather than producing seeds.
- Pinch back Asters, Phlox and Mums to make them more flower productive.
- Fertilize Rhododendrons, Azaleas in spring or early summer.
May
- Mulch flower gardens conserving moisture and preventing weed growth.
- Fertilize roses check for mildew and black spot.
- Install peony hoops.
- Check on deer damage apply deer spray.
- Plant summer blooming bulbs and annuals there is not anymore danger of frost.
- Apply pre-emergent herbicide in garden.
- Prune spring flowering shrubs right after they are flowering - Forsythia, Azalea and Lilacs.
- Make sure that newly planted trees are watered weekly specially in dry conditions and continue watering throughout the season.
- Stake larger perennials so they don't brake.
June
- Keep deadheading { specially chrysanthemum for bushy growth } and staking when necessary.
- Tie climbing roses to trellis or support.
- Fertilize pots, flower beds and lawns.
- Trim hedges and shape yours formal looking shrubs and trees.
- Continue weeding.
- Prune Spruce, Pine, Fir trees in early till to mid June.
July
- Remove spring bulb foliage as it browns.
- Before hot temperature hit divide perennials.
- Continue to water young trees and shrubs on weekly basis.
- Trim maple trees.
- Apply once a week liquid fertilizer to annuals.
August
- Deadhead annuals for more blooms.
- Divide irises and day lilies.
- Complete evergreen pruning before end of August to prevent winter injury.
Fall
General Season Tips
- Plant perennials it will give them time to develop strong root system.
- Split and replant bulbs that become that have become overgrown, let bulb dry out and you can plant it again.
- Cut perennials after hard frost.
- Gather newly fallen leaves for mulch.
- Dig summer -blooming bulbs after the first killing frost and save for next planting season.
September
- Plant trees, shrubs and evergreens to take advantage from cooler whether, use root stimulator to promote roots growth.
- Divide and transplant Peonies and Irises.
- Install new sod and seen old lawn, bare spots due to cooler weather.
- Plant Asters, Mums ,Pansies, flowering Kale and Cabbage.
October
- Clean garden beds-remove all annuals
- Cover not hardy Roses before temperature drop under 25 degrees
- Wrap young and thin - barked tree against sunscald and animal damage
November
- In early and mid November cover perennials to protect the crowns of plants from freezing and thawing of the late fall and early spring seasons.
- Put down an inch of straw or hey over shallow rooted perennials prevent frost heaving.
- Finish planting bulbs blooming next spring, water toughly.
- Adequately water all trees, shrubs and evergreens just before ground becomes frozen.
